[edit] About

Krysten Berg’s US debut “New Moon” is a winning combination of melody, musicianship, vocal ability and quite simply great songs.

Her musical career began in earnest. Krysten’s mother, a talented vocalist in her own right, taught her daughter to harmonize at the age of four. By eight she had started guitar lessons taking up the piano two years later. Though classically trained, it was the pop and rock of her teen years and her older brother, himself a talented keyboardist, that shaped Krysten’s musical sensibilities.

After graduating from Performing Arts College she made the bold move from her native Europe to New York where she honed her craft and paid her dues by becoming an in-demand session singer in a notoriously competitive arena.

“It was a great experience for me, working with producers, learning how records were made” notes Krysten, “but I’m something of a free spirit and at that point I didn’t want to be tied down to being a session singer in New York. My desire was to write and record my own music.” So Krysten traveled between the Big Apple and London, fueling her creative fires in the process.

“London was musically really interesting” reflects Krysten “and there’s a good mentality about making music which I found refreshing, it’s very open." While in London, Krysten was working with top line musicians and producers such as Grammy award winner and producer Mike Howlett, Seal bassist Phil Spalding and Pink Floyd percussionist Gary Wallis.

Despite eliciting interest from the music industry in the UK, Krysten moved back to New York, determined to capitalize on the buzz generated in London and began working on her album "New Moon" as well as putting together her own band. By night she performed at noted Manhattan hot spots, such as CBGB’s Gallery, Downtime and Mercury Lounge, by day she recorded her first songs of the new album with Grammy winning producer Jeff Bova. The success of that material encouraged Krysten to go it alone, writing and producing the rest of the album by herself.

Perhaps inspired by British artists such as Tracy Thorn (Massive Attack) - Krysten has infused subtle dance elements and hip-hop loops to her unquestionably bright pop songwriting style, most notably on “New Moon”, “Falling” and “Thanks”.

“All the songs on the album are very personal” explains Krysten. The title song “New Moon” refers to a new beginning. It’s something internal. When I was recording this, I felt like I’d been through a lot of changes in my life and so it made sense to take charge musically."

Trying to pigeon hole Krysten’s diverse musical style is difficult not to say churlish. A disparate clutch of influences have converged impressively, resulting in an album that flirts with pop sensibilities yet retains an alternative musical and lyrical depth. The whole project is bound intrinsically tight by Krysten's great sense of melody and penmanship.

"The album "New Moon" has been well received and has gotten airplay across the US and Canada. The title song landed in the Top 10 (CMJ). Since its global digital release in 2007, the album has drawn an even wider and growing audience.
