About

Keane bandmembers Tim Rice-Oxley, Tom Chaplin, and Richard Hughes grew up and went to school together in a small town called Battle in the south of England. In the late 1980s, during school holidays spent playing football, they discovered music, like most kids do. from then on they began their journey into becoming a band.

Music was the only thing Keane all wanted to do. With no formal musical training, they began writing and composing songs in their own pace. Inspired by tapes in their walkmans with records from the likes of The Beatles. So by 1999, they moved to London to seek a record deal and start their career as musicians.

The original bandmates, Tim Rice-Oxley and Dominic Scott were the main writes of the band's song. When Scott left in 2001, Rice-Oxley took the role of being the main composer. Then Tom Chaplin and Richard Huges joined the bandwagon. The band was formed in 1995 and it was originally called The Lotus Eaters . But when they realized the it was already taken, they changed it then to "Cherry Keane" after and old lady whom Rice-Oxley and Chaplin knew when they were young. Soonafter in 1997, they have dropped Cherry from their name and simply called themselves Keane.

But luck did not come easy for the band. Two years on, without a record deal, they fled back to the countryside, broke and downhearted, suffering the ill-effects of two years spent in dead-end jobs by day, and dank rehearsal rooms by night.

Salvation arrived in the form of music. By January 2003 Keane had been given the chance to release a record on tiny-but-legendary indie label, Fierce Panda, whose executives had seen them perform at the 12 Bar Club in London. They went back to Battle and recorded Everybody's Changing. The song was made Single of the Week by influential Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq, and gradually picked up by others. All 500 copies sold. They toured the UK for the first time, playing to packed houses and empty rooms.

Soonafter their record was heard on the radio, the lure of Major record labels was hard to resist, and pretty much all of the big labels had got their chequebooks out. Keane signed a deal that offered them total creative control over their music, and went to a small local studio called Helioscentric to record and co-produce (with Andy Green) their debut album Hopes and Fears in late 2003, and headed back out on the road. 'Hopes and Fears' was released in May 2004.

Hopes and Fears sold over 5 million copies worldwide. They two Brit Awards in 2005 (British Breakthrough Act and Best Album); Q Magazine's Best Album award; and were nominated in the Best New Act category at The Grammys. The new album, Under The Iron Sea was recorded at The Magic Shop in Soho, New York, and back at Helioscentric Studios, near Battle.

In making this record Keane tried to confront all their worst fears, to ruthlessly scrutinise ourselves, their relationship with each other, with other people, and with the world at large, and to make a journey into the darkest places we could find.

KEANE CANCEL N.AMERICAN TOUR (8/9/06 16:05)

Keane have taken the difficult decision to cancel their North American tour, including the recently rescheduled dates.

Tom Chaplin is currently being treated for alcohol and drug addiction and will not return to the road until he, and the doctors handling his recovery, feel that he is ready to do so.

Tom's bandmate Tim Rice-Oxley said: "Obviously it's crucial that Tom is given the time to get better properly. With the first dates in America only a fortnight away, his doctors feel there is undue pressure on Tom to rush through rehab and get back out on the road. That's why, between the three of us, we've decided to cancel the North American tour. We'd like to apologise to the fans who've bought tickets, but we've done this in the best interests of our friend - which, ultimately, is in the best interests of the band too. At this stage we plan to go ahead with the tours of the UK and Europe in October and November. We'll be keeping in close touch with Tom and his doctors about how he's progressing and we'll keep you posted."
