About

R&B superstar R. Kelly named her a "prodigy" and the popular Salvadorian singer Alvaro Torres referred to her as Selena. This upcoming superstar, Kat Deluna or Kathleen Empeatriz De Luna in real life was born on November 17, 1987 at Bronx, New York. At an early age, Kat moved to Dominican Republic with her family where she was raised in poverty. Kat loves to listen to the music of Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday, whom she imitated daily on her karaoke machine. At the age of 9, they moved back to the US where she realized her interest in music.

At the age of 12, Kat was invited by the "Queen of Merengue" Milly Quezada, to sing with her on stage in front of thousands of people. At 14, she was accepted to the New Jersey School of the Performing Arts. Kat is said to have a 5 octave vocal range, comparble to that of Mariah Carey's. As a freshman, she responded to an audition in The Village Voice and was accepted into an all-Latina group called Coquette. While with the group, she still continued to search for opportunities.

At the age of 15, she joined a Karaoke competition which was sponsored by Coca-Cola. Her rendition of "I Will Always Love You" won the first place. After the contest she met the legendary Cuban salsa singer Rey Ruiz who advised her to write her own music and therefore she started to do so. Kat signed a contract under GMB Music Group; and through the Sony-distributed Epic label, she released her debut album, 9 Lives last August 2007 with her very first single, "Whine Up".
