About
Born Kate Victoria Tunstall on June 23, 1975 at Edinburgh, Scotland to her physicist father and her mother, a school teacher. Kate adopted her nickname KT after her name, Kate Tunstall. She is the middle child of two boys, named Joe and Daniel.
KT met her biological mother in her twenties, and was told that her father was a folk musician. KT's mother was Chinese, whilst her father was of caucasian descent. But KT still stays true to her Scottish roots. With this in mind, she decided to pursue the same passion she wished to have shared with his birth father, music.
KT Tunstall grew up in St. Andrew's, a university town outside Edinburgh. Music wasn't really part of her life until her older brother introduced her to hair metal. She would sit outside his room and record the music through his door. Young KT then took up piano, the flute and then her singing voice developed gradually. At 16, she took up the guitar and taught herself to play it. By then, she was already writing her own songs.
After gaining a scholarship to Kent School in Connecticut, she began playing as an opening act for musicians like The Grateful Dead and 10,000 Maniacs. She even performed in her very first band, The Happy Campers and played in informal gigs. KT Tunstall pursued a music course at Royal Holloway College, throughout her twenties playing in small gigs and opening for acts like Elia Drew and Tomoko.
KT Tunstall finally hit the London music scene after playing with indie bands and in small events. She also began writing songs for Swedish producer/songwriter Martin Terefe. Afterwhich, Tunstall started recording for her upcoming debut album, Eye To The Telescope, along with legendary producer Steve Osborne (U2, New Order, Happy Mondays).
Her first notable solo performance was with the TV show, Later With Jools Holland singing Black Horse And The Cherry Tree. After rapper Nas cancelled, KT filled in for the slot that she has only 24 hours to prepare for. Her performance caught many viewers' attention and the song went on top of the post-show poll of Later's website. After the well-received performance at Later, KT Tunstall's debut album was released. The album shot to the top of the UK Charts and went straight to #3. With the release, Tunstall was nominated in the 2005 Mercury Music Prize as well.
Since completing her debut album, KT Tunstall has been in a number of gigs, even supporting for singers like Joss Stone in her European tour. She also released a new acoustic album in May 2006 entitled, KT Tunstall's Acoustic Extravaganza, showcasing all her live performances.
Currently, KT Tunstall is working with Scottish band Travis on their newest album due out for 2006. Tunstall is also working for her sophomore album set to be released in 2007.
