About
Born Julio José Iglesias de la Cueva as the eldest son to Dr. Julio Iglesias Puga and Maria Del Rosario de la Cueva y Pugnat in Madrid, Spain on September 23, 1943.
He loves playing soccer. At the age of 20, he was the goalkeeper of the Junior Real Madrid soccer team when he met a car accident on September 22, 1963. This nearly paralyzed him, and forced him to remain in bed for almost two years, with a very slim chance to walk again.
He found comfort in singing and playing the guitar which was given to him by his nurse. Easing the pain of losing his dream to become a soccer player, he began writing sad romantic verses that he eventually realized that he’s already singing the verses that he wrote, accompanied by his guitar.
With his father’s support, coupled with Iglesias’ strong personal will to walk again, slowly produced positive results. His father patiently accompanied him during mornings along the beach where Julio did his therapy. Slowly, he began to walk again. As soon as he recovered, he resumed his studies, traveled to England and learned English. There, he started to sing in a pub and continued writing songs.
With his guitar, he recorded one of his songs. He brought it to a record company and requested the manager that it be interpreted by one of their singers. Instead, the manager asked him to interpret the song himself. This opened the door to him towards popularity and fame as an international singer.
Julio Iglesias’s singing career flourished. Having won in the Benidorm International Song Festival on July 17, 1968, he signed a contract with Discos Columbia. This was followed by another participation in the Brassow Golden Stag Festival in Romania where he represented Spain.
His marriage to Isabel Preysler Arrastria, a Filipino on January 20, 1971 blessed them with three children: Maria Isabel “Chabeli, Julio Jose Iglesias Jr., and Enrique Miguel Iglesias, (his two sons followed his steps though Enrique Iglesias gained much success) . However, the couple divorced in 1978.
Julio Iglesias’s first recording was the song Gwendolyne, named after a girl whom he met in Cambridge, Gwendolyne Bollore, and eventually became his girlfriend.
On December 5, 1990, Julio Iglesias met the beautiful Dutch model Miranda Johanna Maria Rijnsburger, had a relationship with her, and had five children: Miguel Alejandro (September 7, 1997), Rodrigo (April 3, 1999), the twins Victoria and Cristina (May 1, 2001), and Guillermo (May 5, 2007).
At 64, Julio Iglesias is still considered one of the most popular recording artists in the world. From his first recording up to the present, Julio Iglesias continues to croon his fans all over the world.
