[edit] About

Judy Garland or "Frances Ethel Gumm" in real life was born on June 10, 1922 at Grand Rapids, Minnesota to "Frank Gumm" and "Ethel Gumm", both former vaudevilliams. At the age of 2, Judy was included in the dance act entitled "The Gumm Sisters" with her two sisters, "Mary Jane Gumm" and "Virginia Gumm". Frances and her family transfered in Lancaster, California in 1927.

In 1932, Judy left Lancaster and went in Los Angeles. Soon afterwards Frances was personally auditioned by Louis B. Mayer, head of M-G-M. Deeply impressed, Louis signed Judy before she had even taken a screen test. Frances now became Judy Garland. At the age of 13, Judy was already a talent of MGM Film Outfit.

Judy made a movie like, "Pigskin Parade" in 1936 and The Blockbuster Film, "The Wizard of Oz" in 1939 in which she portrayed Dorothy, an orphaned girl living on a farm in the dry planes of Kansas who gets whisked off into the magical world of Oz on the other end of the rainbow. Her song, "Over The Rainbow" became her signature song. It was ranked as the number 1 movie song of all time in the American Film Institute's "100 Years...100 Songs" list.

Other movies which she made are Meet Me in St. Louis in 1944, The Pirate in 1948. She then teamed up with dancing legend Fred Astaire for the delightful musical Easter Parade in 1948. Judy's health deteriorated and she began the first of several suicide attempts. In May 1949, she was checked into a rehabilitation center, which caused her much distress. She came back in 1949 by doing a movie entitled, Good Old Summertime. Her final film under MGM was Summer Stock in 1950.

Judy has also released several studio albums like, Girl Crazy in 1944, Miss Show Business in 1955 which chartered #5 on Pop Album Chart, and Judy At Carnegie Hall among others. The album landed #1 on the Pop Album Chart. The album was also a certified gold, charting for 95 weeks on Billboard, including thirteen weeks at number one. The album won five Grammy Awards including Album of the Year and Best Female Vocal of the Year.

Other singles which was released are "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" in 1976, "Get Happy", "The Trolley Song" and "The Man That Got Away". She died in June 22, 1969 because of self overdose.
