[edit] About
The band was formed in 1977 in Salford, Greater Manchester. The members were composed of "Bernard Albrecht" on guitar and "Peter Hook" on bass. They met at a certain show and decided to formed a group called, "Stiff Kittens". Sooner, they included "Ian Curtis" on vocals and "Steve Brotherdale" on drums in the band. They renamed their group as "Warsaw". They made their first appearance as a supporting band for Buzzcocks and Penetration at Manchester's Electric Circus. In August 1977, Steve left the group and was replaced by, "Stephen Morris". In the later part of that year, the groups name was changed to Joy Division. In the early part of 1978, "Rob Gretton" became their manager.
June of 1978, the group issued their first EP, "An Ideal For Living" under Enigma Records. The groups first EP brought them to the attention of journalist Tony Wilson, who had just formed the Manchester-based indie label Factory Records. Their major debut album, Unknown Pleasures was released in June 1979 under Factory Records. The album features the singles, "Atmosphere" and "Transmission,". In 1980, the group went on a European tour. That same year, their second album, Closer was released.
One evening before the group was said to performed, Ian Curtis attempted suicide by overdosing on phenobarbitone. The next evening, the group was set to performed at Derby Hall while Ian is recovering. The group was set to begin their first American tour in May 1980. Ian told them that he wants to join the said tour. He was excited about the said tour. However, it was in the early morning hours of May 18th, four days before the group was to fly to America, that Ian Curtis hanged himself in an upstairs bedroom of his childhood home. The members of Joy Division had made a pact long before Curtis's death that, should any member leave, the remaining members would change the name of the group. fter a year, Peter, Stephen and Bernard formed a new group called, New Order. In the years that followed, additional Joy Division material was discovered and released, serving to underscore their originality and extend their influence even further.

[edit] Trivia
- Groups name was necessitated by the punk band Warsaw Pakt and was inspired by Karol Cetinsky's World War II novel The House of Dolls. In the book, the term "joy division" was used as slang for concentration camp units wherein female inmates were forced to prostitute themselves for the enjoyment of Nazi soldiers.
