She took a liking to hiphop, finding inspiration with groups like SaltNPepa, Roxanne Shante, clearly music was her calling. She moved into intorducing herself to te German music scene. Without any musical background, she taught herself to sing, hence improving her vocals and giving her the confidence she would need to perform onstage.
Joy Denalane started her career as a backup and support vocals for soul and reggae bands such as Cultural Roots and Family Affair. She caught her big break when DJ Thomilla and Tiefschwarz of a local German club in Stuttgart invited her to give her vocal talents for their electronica and hiphop record for their international dance hit, Music. German musician Max Herre, was also looking for a female vocalist for their rap group, Freundeskreis to perform the song Mit Dir (With You). She also married Herre and produces tow beautiful children, Isaiah (born 2001) and Jamil (born 2003). The couple everntually separated in October 2007.
Herre helped Denalane produce her debut album entitled Mamani in May 2002. The album is a blend of traditional R&B, Jazz, Afrobeat, and South African Folk. The album went straight to the German charts, ranking number eight. She helped put the definition of German Soul within the music arena. Her American debut started when she shared again her vocal talents in the remix of the single Go by soul singer Common.
