Joi is an American R&B and rock singer and songwriter from Nashvilled, Tennessee. She often performs with OutKast, the Organized Noise production team, and Goodie Mob.

Early Life
Joi Gilliam simply known as Joi was born on January 25, 1972 in Nashville, Tennessee. His father plays football for the Pittsburgh Steelers. When her parents got divorced, she spent most of her younger days with her grandmother. She goes to church with her grandmother and has been singing in the choir at the age of four. While growing up, to compliment her singing talent, Joi also took up ballet and dancing classes and moved to Philadelphia after graduating high school. In Philadelphia, she begun to sing at local clubs and talent shows. Missing home, in less than a year she decided to go back home to Nashville and met Dallas Austin, an executive for a recording company. Austin saw her potential and wasting no time at nineteen, she was signed by EMI records and started to record her debut album in Atlanta.
Debut Album
Her debut album was called Pendulum Vibe was released on 1994 with Austin as the Executive Producer. The lead single of the album was "Sunshine in the Rain". Although the single received heavy airplay, the album failed to become a hit selling only 77,000 copies in the United States. Nonetheless, it gave Joi widespread media attention and two more sinlges were released "I Found My Niche" and "Freedom". Freedom was recorded with an all star cast of female singers including Aaliyah, Mary J. Blige, Vanessa Williams and many more.
Her second album Amoeba Cleansing Syndrome was plague with delays and was eventually cancelled. Disappointed with the cancellation she decided to take a leave in the music scene to take care of her child.
Back to the Scene
After almost seven years of being out in the music scene, finally Joi has came back with her third album Star Kitty's Revenge released on 2002. The lead single was "Missing You" which was followed by "Lick". After a disappointing sales of the album, she was released by Universal records
Tennesse Slim Is The Bomb is her first album after leaving Universal. She signed with Pookie Entertainment to prepare for the release of ther fourth album. But several issues hounded the released including that of the printing department. Eager to release the album, she created a record label for herself called Joilicious and put on the finishing touches of the album. Finally, the album was released as her first independent release on 2006.
Throughout her career she had collaborated with several artist such as Curtis Mayfield, Too Short, Jim Crow, Fishbone and many more.
