About
Jodeci was formed in Charlotte, North Carolina on 1990. Member "JoJo" Hailey, Donald "DeVante Swing" DeGrate and Cedric "K-Ci" Hailey combined their nicknames which resulted to Jodeci. Dalvin DeGrate was later on added to the group. The boys met when Dalvin was seeing with a girl who was K-Ci's girlfriend at that time. A fight almost took place. The Hailey and DeVante brothers started hanging out due to this incident. They went to parties and talked about r&b music. The four boys started touring singing gospel music and recorded tapes. They were a member of the Pentecostal church where DeGrates' father served as a minister.
When DeVante was 16 years old he decided to leave home for Minneapolis hoping to land a job in Prince's organization but was declined. He went back to Charlotte and started writing his own songs and Jojo sang. The duo planned to go to New York to pass around their demos, K-Ci and Dalvin ended up going with them. The boys gave their demos to Uptown Entertainment. Andre Harrell, President of the label was impressed and immediately gave them a contract. In 1991, they started recording Forever My Lady, their debut album. The single "Come and Talk to Me" was a gold single and the album sold over three million copies.
Before the release of their follow-up album, Diary Of A Mad Band, Jodeci didn't like how Uptown Entertainment treated them. They gave the impression that they were leaving for Death Row Records. In 1993, DeVante and K-Ci were being sued by a woman who K-Ci met a club and he brought her back to his apartment. The woman said that K-Ci touched her breast and DeVante pointed a gun at her. They were both pleaded guilty. In 1995, Jodeci released their third album, The Show, The After Party, The Hotel.
