Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Raised by her mother and grandmother in the ghetto, Scott was a smart child. At 8 months she learned how to talk and at the age of 4 years old she started to read. She had an abusive childhood by her stepfather, which is the reason why Scott and her mother moved in with her grandmother. She and her grandmother were very close, Scott slept beside her grandmother until the age of 18 years old. Scott attended college at Temple University studying secondary education.
Scott had a unique teaching method. She would teach her students to incorperate singing to help them in their memorization. She received a lot of negative comments and later on quit. A friend of hers let Scott join a local theater troop. Scott got a spot on Rent. Scott became friends with DJ Jazzy Jeff. In 1999, she wrote a number of songs in just three days. Scott wriote "You Got Me" and was performed by Erykah Badu and The Roots. It earned a Grammy for Best Rap Performance (Duo or Group). Jeff made copies of her demos, she was later on signed in with Hidden Beach label. Scott also worked with Will Smith and Common for the soundtrack of Down to Earth, Wild, Wild West and In Too Deep.
In 2000, Who Is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds, Vol. I was released. The album was a certified platinum. In 2001, Scott received an Aretha Franklin Award as "Entertainer of the Year" at the Lady of Soul Awards. She wrote a songe for her husband Lyzel Williams entitled, "He Loves Me (Lyzel In E Flat)."
