About
Jemma Griffiths, better known as Jem, was born on June 18, 1975. She actually received a degree in law from Sussez University in Brighton, but at age 13, she was already deeply interested in creating music that she started writing songs at that tender age. She reportedly attended class as little as she could just so she will not be kicked out. Because she really wanted a career in the music industry, Jem began putting up a mobile studio in 1999. It was during this period that she honed her songwriting skills. She also finished doing four demos during this period. Her demo of the song "Finally Woken" became widely played in L.A.'s KCRW-FM in 2002, making it one of the most requested songs in the radio station. The song actually gave her the distinction of being one of their top 5 played artists at that time. With that, she was able to impress Bruce Flohr, who then offered to take Jem under the label ATO Records.
Jem first released an EP entitled It All Starts Herein 2003. Her first full-length album Finally Woken followed in March 23, 2004.
Jem's songs have also been featured in various television shows and movies. "Come on Closer" was used in the Jude Law/Julia Roberts movie Closer, "Just a Ride" in Jennifer Lopez's Monster-in-Law and Julia Stiles's The Prince and Me, "24" in the action sci-fi thriller Ultraviolet, and "Once in Every Lifetime" in Eragon. Meanwhile, "Wish I," "Just a Ride," "Save Me," and "Flying High" were featured in Grey's Anatomy. In 2004 she appeared in the American teen drama The O.C., performing the Paul McCartney classic "Maybe I'm Amazed." Jem also collaborated with Guy Sigsworth on "Nothing Fails," a song that is included in Madonna's American Life album.
She has been busy throughout 2006 working on her follow up to Finally Woken. Jem worked with producers Jeff Bass of The Bass Brothers and Lester Mendez for the sophomore album, which is expected to be released in 2007. Bass has worked with Eminem, 50 Cent and D12, while Mendez is known for his work with Nelly Furtado and Shakira.

Reviews
- It is good that Jem does not confine her music to just one style. She explores different genres, learns and applies what she thinks is great for her music. -1630cafe 04/24/07
