Janis Joplin is an American Rock singer. She was voted no.47 in Greatest Artist in Rock 'n' Roll by Rolling Stone and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

Blues singer Janis Lyn Joplin was born on January 19, 1943 at Port Arthur, Texas. Janis struggled with obesity at her teen years. She was influenced with the blues genre at a young age. Joplin became the frontwoman of a San Francisco band named Big Brother & the Holding Company. In 1967, the band played at the Monterey Pop Festival, Joplin made them a huge hit titled "Ball and Chain". The performance landed the Big Brother a record contract with Mainstream label and later switched to Columbia. In 1968, Cheap Thrills, which went straight to #1 on the album charts. In th 60's, she left the group to pursue her solo career.
In 1969, Joplin issued her solo-debut album, I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!, under Columbia Records with the Kozmic Blues Band. The album was a smash hit but it was not her best yet. She also released the single "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)" it was unsuccessful. Joplin battled with drug and alcohol abuse but in her music career, Joplin was doing well. In 1971, Joplin released a more mature album titled Pearl.
