About

The youngest among the five members was Michael who was born on August 29, 1958. The other members were: Jackie (Sigmund Esco), born May 4, 1951; Tito (Toriano Adaryll), born October 15, 1953; Jermaine (Jermaine La Juane), born December 11, 1954; and Marlon, born on March 12, 1957.

The original line up though included Reymund Jones and Milfred Hite who were unrelated to the Jacksons. Michael and younger brother Marlon joined later and the five brothers became the principal line up, calling themselves Jackson 5.

Jackson 5became fully active in 1964 with their first public performance at Mr. Lucky’s in Gary, Indiana, their hometown.

They became officially signed up under Motown Records in 1968 under Berry Gordy, and they were off to carry Motown’s success. This came true with their historical first four consecutive No. 1 hits in 1970 that included: “I Want You Back” (January), “ABC” (April), “The Love You Save” (June), and “I’ll Be There” (October).

According to Berry Gordy of Motown, the Jackson 5 were the last big stars to come rolling off the assembly line. They move by the group to step out of Motown was the company’s refusal to update the group’s image which eventually believed to be the reason for the group’s declining success. Joseph, their father and manager, negotiated a new recording contract with CBS Records in 1975.

The group’s name was changed to The Jacksons, and Jermaine, who chose to remain with Motown, was replaced by then 14-year-old Randy, their youngest brother.

With CBS, the Jacksons continued to release popular singles. They wanted to achieve autonomy so in 1978, the Jacksons on their own produced their Destiny LP Album. Michael and Randy wrote “Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)”, the biggest single after Motown which gave them a double-platinum. Eventually, the album Destiny gave them a platinum award.

While the group continued to perform relatively well, Michael’s popularity as a solo performer became unstoppable. Although he continued to perform with the group, his work with Diana Ross in the Motown/Universal Pictures motion picture The Wiz gave him the chance to work with its producer Quincy Jones. In due course, Michael Jackson, in collaboration with Jones, resulted to Michael’s first solo album Off the Wall. Released in 1979, the album sold 20 million copies worldwide, with four top 10 hit singles and two number one singles.

The Jacksons’ last venture together with brother Michael was the 1984 Victory Tour. This was also their last project to include Michael. Their album Victory featured the shared lead vocals of Michael Jackson and Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones. The Victory world tour sponsored by Pepsi was massively successful, although controversy ensued when tickets were priced at thirty dollars.

Without Michael, each of the remaining members attempted to go solo. However, their efforts did not give them positive results. Jermaine, Jackie, Tito and Randy were reunited without Michael in their one last album 2300 Jackson Street, referring to the family’s street address in Gary, Indiana. By this time, Michael’s popularity was accelerating (and that of Janet Jackson, their youngest sister, was also growing) and thus overriding their attempt to regain success.

The Jacksons officially broke up in 1990.
