[edit] About

Itzhak Perlman was born on August 31, 1945 at Tel Aviv, Palestine now called Israel. At age four he lost the use of his legs due to polio. Shortly after, he began to study the violin. By age ten he was performing in concerts and recitals with the Israel Broadcasting Orchestra. He studied at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv

He came to New York and soon was propelled into the international arena with an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1958. After winning a talent competition to appear on American television he obtained scholarships and awards that allowed him to stay in New York and study at the Juilliard School with Ivan Galamian. Itzhak made his professional debut playing Wienawski F-sharp minor Concerto at Carnegie Hall in 1963. After winning first prize in the Leventritt Competition in 1964, he entered the highest rank of international violin soloists.

Since then, Itzhak has appeared with every major orchestra and in recitals and festivals throughout the world. He returned to Israel in 1965 with a stunning eight concert and in 1968, made his British debut at Festival Hall with the London Symphony Orchestra. In 1986, he was one of the 12 first-generation US citizens to be honored with the Medal of Liberty by President Ronald Reagan. In 1987, he joined the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra for their concerts in Warsaw and Budapest, as well as other Eastern bloc countries.

He again made history as he joined the Israel Philharmonic for its first visit to the Soviet Union in April/May of 1990 and was cheered by audiences in Moscow and Leningrad who thronged to hear his recital and orchestral performances. In December 1994, Itzhak and the Israel Philharmonic performed in China and India, marking the first time the Philharmonic played in either nation.

In his 50th birthday year, he performed the major violin repertoire in a special concert series in London. His 20 CD set was released in May 1995. In the 2000-2001 season his conducting debuts include engagements with Boston, National and San Francisco symphonies and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Itzhak won the violin soloist for the 2005 film Memoirs of a Geisha, along with cellist Yo-Yo Ma. He played selections from the musical scores of the movies nominated for "Best Original Score" at the 73rd Academy Awards and at the 78th Academy Awards. The joy of making music has seldom been translated so well and it is this combination of talent and personal charm, which makes him such an outstanding violinist, and the greatest violin virtuoso of our time.
