About

The band were formed by Daniel Kessler when he met drummer Greg Drudy on the New York University campus. Drudy, at the time was a member of the screamo band Hot Cross then. Kessler later recruited Carlos Dengler. The final member he invited to join his band was their vocalist Paul Banks, whom Kessler met in Paris years before. in 2000, Drudy left the band and Kessler hired Sam Fogarino, whom they knew from a local record store. Hence, Interpol was formed.

The band began writing and recording siongs. The four lads forged a unique sound in a variety of the city’s decrepit and shady rental rehearsal rooms. Paying by the hour, they cultivated a unique aesthetic and developed their notoriously delicate and complicated creative process. Interpol went gigging at venues like Brownies, Mercury Lounge, and The Bowery Ballroom. Throughout 2000 and 2001 they opened for bands like ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Arab Strap, and The Delgados. Then came Interpol’s first release, at the end of 2000, in the form of the third installment of the FukdID #3 EP series on Scottish label Chemikal Underground.

The release of their debut album Turn On The Bright Lights in August 20, 2002 received wide reviews and sold well for an indie release. The album was topnotch on the music business' critics. Their sophomore album released in September 28, 2004 Antics received notable accolades as well. Not only from critics but from other bands as well like The Chameleons. The album is their most confident album, selling more that its predecessor. The dark mix os bass throb, strong drums and powerful, reminiscent lyrics makes their second album another hit.

Interpol will take time off after their Antics tour for an unknown amount of time. The band released a new single, Direction, on Six Feet Under, Vol. 2: Everything Ends, the second soundtrack album to the HBO drama Six Feet Under, on June 28, 2005. They are no currently working on their third album as well. Their contract with Matador Records expired, and they have now signed with Capitol Records. The album is expected to be finished sometime in 2007. Though the band has already released two tracks: The Heinrich Maneuvre and Pawn Shop.

Trivia

  • The name Interpol supposedly comes from Paul Banks' name. While he was in Spain, friends would call him Pol, Pol, Interpol. Another suggestion as to the reason the band is so called is because the word Interpol suggests order and efficiency, similar to the style in which the band plays.
  • Bassist and keyboard player Carlos is also a DJ. He often spins at parties while the band is on tour and has hosted several ongoing parties in NYC.
  • The band has received mail in the past asking them about the recruiting process for the police organization Interpol.
