About
Ian Hunter or "Ian Hunter Patterson" in real life was born on June 3, 1939 in Oswestry, Shropshire to "Walter Patterson", a member of the British Intelligence Agency MI5 and "Freda Patterson". His father moved his family on a regular basis. Ian lived in Hamilton Scotland for a time, before the family settled into Shrewsbury. He attended at Priority Grammar School. He became an apprenticed as a journalist at The Shrewsbury News and Wellington Evening Journal. Ian's father, however, didn't appreciate Ian's penchant for delinquency and so Ian left home at 17.
He won a talent competition at Butlin's holiday camp by singing the song "Blue Moon" with "Colin Broom" and "Colin York" of the band called, "The Apex". After winning, he moved in Northampton in 1966 and soon joined "The Apex". Ian left the group before the released of their first single.
Ian went back in Shrewsbury to look for a job. He formed a harmonica duo with "Tony Wardle". After earning too much money, he moved again in Northampton to rejoin "The Apex". However, he left the group again in 1962. He formed his own band "Hurricane Henry and the Shriekers" in 1963 with "Tony Marriott" and "Julian Coulter". He left the group in 1965 and shortly joined "Homelanders".
In 1966 Ian moved to London, where he joined The Scenery with guitarist "Miller Anderson", drummer "Dave Dufort", and keyboard player "Dante Smith". They added "Freddie Lee". After one year, Miller introduced Ian to "Mick Ronson" another guitarist. The band became popular in 1968. By later part of that year, Miller and Ian began to grow restless. The Rock and Roll revival was on the way out, and the Blues was moving in. They split with Freddie in November, and began playing blues together at clubs and colleges.
Miller joined a new band, "Keef Hartley Band". Freddie went solo. Ian joined a band, "The Silence". Silence released an album, but it received no attention. He left the band and began touring in Germany with Freddie. After that, Ian became the lead singer of one of the most popular live bands in England, Moot The Hoople. Their debut album, All The Young Dudes was released in 1972 which brought the band into the British Top Ten and the American Top 40. For the next two years, the group had a consistent stream of hits in both the U.K. and the U.S.
In 1973, the band began to fall apart, their founding member and lead guitarist left the band. Ian also left the group in 1974 with "Mick Ronson" who became also the member of the group. He went in New York, where he and Mike worked for Ian's first solo album. He released his self-titled debut album in 1975 which features the hit single, "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," a Top 20 U.K. hit.
Mick and Ian parted ways after the released of his first album. His next album, All-American Alien Boy was released in 1976. In 1979, he was reunited to Mick who produced and arranged his next album. His next album, Short Back N' Sides was released in 1981. His next album, All of the Good Ones Are Taken was released in 1983. For six years, Ian went hiatus.
His next album, YUI Orta was released in 1989. Dirty Laundry was issued in 1995. In March 1997, Artful Dodger was released under Varese Records. His latest album, [[[Shrunken Heads]] was released in 2007.
