About
Grateful Dead were formed in 1965 at San Francisco.
The band was headed by Jerry Garcia who was born in San Francisco. He loves bluegrass music. He plays and old steel guitar. Phil Lesh plays bass guitar. Bob Weir is the youngest original member of the group. Ron McKerman plays keyboards and harmonica. He was the group vocalist before he died in 1973 when he was only 27 years old. Bill Kreutzmanjoins the group and plays the drum. In 1967, Mickey Hart joins the band to be their second drummer. He also plays other percussion instruments. Tom Constanten was added to be their second keyboardist.
In 1970, Tom left the band leaving Ron as the solo keyboardist. In 1971, Mickey left the band. In that year, Keith Godchaux joins the band to be their second keyboardist. In the early 1972, Donna Godchaux, Keith's wife joins the Grateful Dead to be their backing vocalist.
In the later part of 1972, Ron became sick to the point he could no longer tour with the group so he decided to quit the band. In 1975, Mickey rejoined the group. In 1979, Donna and Keith left the band. Brent Mydland joins the band as their keyboardist and vocalist. In 1980, Keith died in a car accident.
In 1990, Brent died. He was the band keyboardist for 11 years. Former The Tubes keyboardist Vince Welnick joins the band to be their new keyboardist and vocals. Bruce Hornsby also joins the group as their second keyboardist.
The band released many studio albums including live and compilation albums. When Jerry died in August 1985, the remaining members formally decided to disband.
In 2006, Vince died because of suicide as reportedly told by the news. Last January 24, 2007 Bob, Bill and Mickey were reunited at the post-inauguration fund raising party for speaker of the house Nancy Pelusi. They perfomed some Grateful Dead Classics.
