The album was originally released on August 12, 1986 by Warner Bros. Records. It was reissued on March 6, 2007 by Wea Records. The album features his most hit singles, Graceland and You can Call Me Al.

The album was number 81 on the list of Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. In 1989, it was rated number 5 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s.
