About
Founded in Buffalo, New York, the Goo Goo Dolls initially were known as the Sex Maggots and consisted of John Rzeznik, Robby Takac, and George Tutuska. The band later changed their name to the Goo Goo Dolls, a name picked out from an ad in a True Detective magazine. They released their self-titled debut album in 1987 under Metal Blade Records.
The Goo Goo Dolls realized commercial success in 1995, when their single Name from the album A Boy Named Goo hit the airwaves. They were propelled to stardom in 1998, when their single Iris was released on the City of Angels soundtrack. The song stayed on the Billboard Charts at number one for 18 weeks and was nominated for three Grammy awards. The album also marked the end for drummer George Tatuska, who was involved in a personal feud between Rzeznik that ended up in his dismissal.
Texan drummer Mike Malinin joined the group and toured relentlessly to promote A Boy Named Goo. Their hard work paid off when the album raked millions in album sales making it a Double Platinum for the Goos. With the marketed success of the album, legal battles were brought to them by their record label Metal Blade Records over royalties that was being withheld from the band. The band eventually signed on with Metal Blade's parent company Warner Brothers.
The Goo Goo Dolls were finally nominated for a Grammy Award with the success of their single Iris whihch was released in their album Dizzy Up The Girl. Other hits included Slide, Black Balloon, and Dizzy.
The band is still together, amidst reports of a break up. To prove their detractors wrong, their 8th album Let Love In released in 2006 marked their 20th anniversary being a band. The album showcases up and coming hits like Better Days and Stay With You.
