God's Son was declared "the best hip-hop album of the year" by Time magazine and went on to be certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

The album was dedicated to the memory of Nas' mother, Ann Jones, who died of cancer in early 2002 and is the subject of the song "Dance," in which he pronounces his wish to have "just one more dance" with her.
