About

Garbage is a group of three full-time producers, Butch Vig, Duke Erikson and Steve Marker. Initially, these three producers held an informal session done in Marker's basement. They eventually recruited vocalist Shirley Manson who has previously worked with the bands Angelfish and Goodbye Mr. MacKenzie as their lead singer.

Butch Vig (shortened for Vigorson) is a native of Viroqua, Wisconsin. Learned to play the piano during his childhood and drums at his teens. He attended the University of Wisconsin in a short period of time before he pursue his career in music. He was first seen in the band, Spooner, who played the drums. Erikson was also a Spooner member who played the guitar and Marker was a New Yorker who flew to Wisconsin to attend college. He became a fan of Spooner and soon became a member of the said band. Vig left Spooner afterwards but still in touch with the band. Few years later, Spooner was renamed Firetown and Vig played the drums in a new outfit.

Firetown splintered in the late 80s due to lack of commercial success. Prior to the band's information, Marker and Vig purchased an eight-track cassette recorder and set-up a little studio in a local warehouse, which they called Smart Studios, where Vig recorded multiple local punk and alternative bands inside the warehouse. By the late 80s, Smart became one of the hippest recording studios in America. Some records released here are Touch & Go, Sub Pop and Twin/Tone among other Indie labels. After Vig produced Nirvana's Nevermind, Vig & Smart attained success in 1991. Nirvana's Nevermind has put Butch Vig into superstar producer status and couple of years later, he began producing numerous American alternative superstars in the names of Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins and L7.

After a while, Vig and Marker began playing together and convinced Erikson to join them. Soon, Erikson joined the two and Garbage was born in 1993. After a year of playing together, they eventually hired Shirley Manson after seeing Angelfish performed on MTV. Manson started out her musical career at a young age and joined the band Mr. MacKenzie at her teens. There she played the keyboards and sang as backing vocals. Few years later, she toured with the band and left Angelfish.

During the late 1994 and early 1995, Garbage recorded their debut album under Almo Records and released in the fall of 1995. After receiving numerous supports from radio and MTV, the album climbed up the chart at the end of 1995 for its single Queer received heavy airplay. By the summer of '96, Garbage has reached gold status in the US and shortly, it achieved platinum sales as Stupid Girl and I'm Only Happy When It Rains became alternative-radio staples.

In the summer of 1997, Garbage began to work for their second album, Version 2.0 that was released in May of 1998. The album went platinum afterwards and was nominated in the Grammys for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album.

In 2001, the group released their critically acclaimed third album, Beautiful Garbage. It's first single Androgyny became a moderate radio hit.

The band almost split up before returning in their fourth album, Bleed Like Me (2005) which peaked at a career-high at #4.

After four albums and seven Grammy nominations, Garbage has released Absolute Garbage in July 2007. It's a compilation album which featured the new track Tell Me Where It Hurts. Absolute Garbage contains 17 songs of extreme and intense emotion, from Stupid Girl, Queer and #1 Crush to Special, Bleed Like Me and Why Do You Love Me.
