About

From A Basement on the Hill was released on October 19, 2004 by Anti- Records. The album peaked at number 19 in the U.S. Billboard 200 Charts and number 41 in the U.K. Albums Chart on that same year.

Originally, it was intended to be released as a double album. But at the time of Elliott Smith's death the album was unfinished that prompted family members to hire former producer Rob Schnapf and ex-girlfriend Joanna Bolme to do the finishing touches. It may not be released as it was intended to be but nonetheless, the album was released with 15 tracks as contractual obligation with the singer's former label DreamWorks.

Trivia

  • Some fans accuse Elliott's family and the producers of cutting the darkest songs from the album such as "True Love," which deals graphically with addiction and then rehab, "Abused," and "Suicide Machine" in an attempt to make the album 'happier', an accusation that has been denied by family members.
