About

The band recorded their full-length debut album with Howard Benson (Papa Roach, My Chemical Romance, POD and All American Rejects) in 2005. Flyleaf stayed in Los Angeles for two months and toiled on more than 20 songs with Howard Benson at Bay 7 Studios. The band and Benson decided on the 12 of the 20 songs to produce, and on October 4, 2005, the record was released under the title Flyleaf. Octone partnered with SRE Recordings to distribute Flyleaf in Christian markets.

Their singles "I'm So Sick" and "Fully Alive" has been regular in the US Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts. Flyleaf has also produced music videos for the two singles, both created in 2006. Since their self-titled debut release, the band has gained a stronger fan base.

From the Flyleaf bio:

While many loud rockers reopen old wounds by singing about their broken homes and broken hearts, Flyleaf confront past traumas to heal old scars and prove in the process that hope shines brighter than despair.

Flyleaf's self-titled debut album echoes with songs about abuse, neglect, addiction and dysfunction, and messages about overcoming adversity. And the band's wide array of brooding beats, atmospheric textures and lunging riffs compliment Mosley's emotionally revealing lyrics, which range from breathy and beautiful to scathing and aggressive.

The blank page that one finds at the beginning of a book when it is first opened up is the flyleaf. It is the page that one writes a note, usually a personal note, to a friend when they give the book as a gift. Through amazing spiritual and sometimes gut-wrenching lyrics and their emotionally charged metal driven music, Flyleaf is penning the "dedication" on that blank page, and it's a positive and hopeful message to their fans and to hardcore rock music lovers everywhere.

Trivia

  • The song "Cassie" is about the story of Cassie Bernall, a Columbine High School shooting victim who was asked if she believed in God and responded with a "yes." That "yes" cost her her life: The question asked in order/To save her life or take it/The answer no to avoid death/The answer yes would make it...Do you believe in God/Written on the bullet/Say yes to pull the trigger...And Cassie pulled the trigger.
  • The song "Fully Alive" is about Layla Palmer, the wife of Kevin Palmer, the lead vocalist of Amity Lane and formerly of Trust Company.

Reviews

Thick instrumentals and hard rock base is designative of Flyleaf's album, owing to the members of the band doing their driving guitar riffs, steady bass and heavy drum rhythms. Aside from the guys producing such massive beats, this alternative metal group boasts of a female lead, Lacey Mosley, who's armed with a voice extending from gentle to aggressively powerful (manifesting in her screams). Mosley shouts positivity with all the negativity she had experienced, and her emotionally-loaded lyrics also pronounce other conquering stories including Layla Palmer's (Fully Alive) and Columbine martyr's Cassie Bernall (Cassie). --jamie 06:19, 20 February 2007 (PST)

A buzz began to circulate over Belton, Texas, quartet Flyleaf when the band's debut EP first made the rounds. Fronted by singer Lacey Mosley, the band generates an enormous sound that draws on elements of nu-metal, screamo, and alternative rock, with Mosley's sometimes ferocious/sometimes sweet vocals lending the group a distinctive edge. Expectation ran high for the band's first long-player, but, luckily, Flyleaf's self-titled debut full-length doesn't disappoint. Leading off with the album's first single, "I'm So Sick," the album states its business and continues from there. There are hooks and melodic elements woven skillfully into the thrash, ensuring that Flyleaf's songs won't fade away as easily as many by their alt-metal contemporaries. But don't let Mosley's sometimes charming voice lull you: she can scream like a banshee, and the band hits with as much muscle as anyone on the scene. Fans of the genre are encouraged to check this out.

Kerrang (Magazine) (p.56) - "Flyleaf have a harder, rawer edge, raiding the arsenals of both grunge and nu-metal for a churning, down-tuned guitar-based attack."
