About
Flyleaf was formed in 2000 by Lacey Mosley and drummer James Culpepper. Sameer Bhattacharya and Jared Hartmann played guitars for the band, and in 2002, Pat Seals joined in as bassist. The band has been performing under several names, including Passerby in which they became known prior to signing a label. Unfortunately, another artist trademarked the name, so they changed their name to Flyleaf, befitting the personal, revealing messages in their songs. Mosley explains, "A flyleaf is the blank page at the front of a book. It's a dedication page, the place you write a message to someone you're giving a book to. And that's kind of what our songs are--personal messages that provide a few moments of clarity before the story begins."
In 2003, Flyleaf landed a show at the South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, a legendary annual music festival where independent and unsigned bands gather together. The event led to showcases for several labels, which then led to Flyleaf signing a label after one particular showcase. In January 7, 2004, they were officially introduced as Octone Records' new talent, the same recording suit that uncovered the sound of Maroon 5.
A Flyleaf EP was released in 2005, produced by Rick Parasher (Pearl Jam, Blind Melon) and Brad Cook (Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age). To promote the EP, Flyleaf toured with Saliva, Breaking Benjamin, 3 Doors Down, and Trust Company. They likewise toured with Cold, Staind, and POD to launch the EP. The singles "Breathe Today," "Red Sam" and "Cassie" were released from this self-titled debut EP, which also appear on Flyleaf's full length.
In 2005, the band recorded their full-length debut album with Howard Benson, who has previously worked with Papa Roach, My Chemical Romance, POD and All American Rejects. On October 4, 2005, the record was released under the title Flyleaf. They set out three singles from the album, "All Around Me," "Fully Alive" and "I'm So Sick." Octone partnered with SRE Recordings to distribute Flyleaf in Christian markets, and in early 2006, the band moved to J-Records as a part of an exclusive band development deal between J-Records, RCA, and Octone Records.
Flyleaf's music is probably best described by Lacey herself. "Our music is passionate and on purpose. It's angry and sad and urgent and loving. It's about our experiences and passions and how we have overcome. Our message is to encourage the hopeless people to have hope, and the apathetic people to stand up in their destinies and purposes and believe in something good and world changing."

Reviews
With reference to instrumentation and Mosley's arresting vocals, Flyleaf has that driving edge. Lyrically speaking, Flyleaf is a deviation from angsty bands spitting rage, fueling hate and condemnation. Although screams and forcible metal sound display turmoil and madness, they also reveal passion and love, hope and faith. Lacey Mosley's songwriting proclaims hopeful resolutions in desperate conditions. She sings about adversities and afflictions based on her own encounters, but provides the way out, which is The Way alone. That is Flyleaf's driving force, the light at the end of the tunnel they profess in their songs. --jamie 14:55, 19 February 2007 (PST)
