Fishbone was formed in 1979 at South Central Los Angeles. The members comprised of "Angelo Moore" on vocals, saxophone, "Kendall Jones on guitar", "John Norwood Fisher" on bass, "Philip Fisher" on drums, "Dirty Walter A. Kibby II" on vocals, trumpets and "Chris Dowd" on keyboards and trombones. Their debut album, In Your Face was issue in 1986 under Columbia Records. Their next album, Truth and Suol was released in September 1988. The album landed at #153 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart. In 1991, their album, The Reality of My Surroundings was released. It chartered at #49 on the US Billboard 200 Albums Chart. Their next album, Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe was issued in 1993 and chartered at #99 on Billboard Chart. Their fifth album, Chim Chim's Bad Ass Revenge was released in 1996 and reached #158 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. In 2000, their album, Fishbone and the Familyhood Nextperience Present: The Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx was released under Hollywood Records. Their latest album, Still Stuck in Your Throat was issued in 2006 under Sound in Color Records.

- In 2007 Fishbone appeared in the David Arquette movie The Tripper.
- The band is also featured in the 1987 movie Back to the Beach, performing a rendition of "Jamaica Ska" with Annette Funicello singing lead vocals.
- Fishbone have played in Amsterdam on numerous occasions. They were filmed at the 2003 Cannabis Cup awards.
