About

Released on March 23, 2004, Finally Woken was released under ATO Records and produced by Ge-Ology, Yoad Nevo, and Jem herself. The lead single "They" is actually based on a sample from The Swindle Singer's "Prelude in F Minor" which appears on Jazz Sebastian Bach Vol II, an album they released in the 1960s. The title track "Finally Woken" is the one that got Jem signed under ATO Records. It became one of the most requested songs in KCRW-FM in L.A. when it was still a demo. In this track, Jem experiments with jazzy vocals. In "Come on Closer" and "24," she uses roaring electric guitars and violins for instrumentation, in contrast to the reggae-tinted "Save Me."

The critical acclaim for this album and the fact that television shows and movies choose to feature her songs show how talented Jem is as a singer/songwriter/producer. The follow up to the album is eagerly anticipated.

Reviews

  • Jem may have been tagged as a Dido-wannabe, but this debut of hers certainly refutes that. She is not afraid to take risks with her music. -1630cafe 04/24/07
