About
Marshall Bruce Mathers III, more commonly known as Eminem, a name taken from his initials, was born on October 17, 1972 in Saint Joseph, Missouri. He spent his childhood with only his mother, traveling often from Saint Joseph to Detroit, Michigan and back. Eminem lacked interest in school as a kid, as he switched schools frequently and failed many times, until he finally dropped out. He actually started rapping at the age of four and got serious with it until he became known as Eminem when he was 17 years old. He became a battle rapper in clubs and performed over the radio, and even though he was initially ignored by the hip-hop fans because of his color, he eventually got their A-OK sign as he worked his way to proving them that he is indeed a qualified rapper.
With the birth of his daughter Hailie Jade Scott with girlfriend Kim Scott, Eminem became even more determined to succeed in the field of rapping. In 1996, he released his first album Infinite, receiving only a few reviews. He also produced Slim Shady, a song that was about his emotions towards his mother. A year later, her girlfriend left him, taking their child with her. This event led him to alcoholism and illicit drugs, but finally realizing that the only way to get out of such a depression was to pursue his dreams in the music industry, Eminem worked on and released The Slim Shady EP. With this album, he was then known to be music’s next great white hope. In that same year, he won in the Rap Olympics MC Battle in LA in its Freestyle Category, a feat that earned him a contract with Dr. Dre. The two then recorded “My Name Is” until Dr. Dre, apparently amazed by his talent, agreed to produce Eminem’s next album. He reconciled with his girlfriend Kim Scott at the time and in the fall of 1998, the couple got wed. Eminem signed with Interscope a little later, and in 1999, The Slim Shady LP was released. This album includes his hits like ”My Name Is” and “Guilty Conscience,” and gave Eminem two Grammy Awards.
In 2001, The Marshall Mathers LP was released, furthering his success in the hip-hop society. This album, containing tracks such as “Stan,” “Forgot about Dre,” and “The Real Slim Shady,” topped the success of The Slim Shady LP, winning three Grammy Awards and more for Eminem. This year was a time for both highs and lows, as he had a divorce, a quarrel with Everlast, and at the same time, he got the joint custody of Hailie Jade, and was now living a comfortable life owing to the monumental success of his album. During this same year, Eminem re-formed D-12 with his friends in Detroit, released an album, and toured. After the tour, Eminem decided to enter the film industry, and started shooting 8 Mile, which closely resembled his life in Detroit. Like Infinite, the movie had bad reviews, and so Eminem had to go back to his music. He released the single “Without Me,” and soon thereafter was the album The Eminem Show. This was equally successful as the other 2 previous releases, as it earned him another 2 Grammy Awards, 2 Brit Awards, a Juno Award, etc. His performance on “Lose Yourself” for 8 Mile was also applauded by award-giving bodies, the Oscars included.
In 2005, Eminem released his greatest hits compilation album, Curtain Call: The Hits, another successful release, topping the Billboard album charts in a short time. During this year Eminem also announced his second reconciliation with ex-wife Kim Scott, and told the media of his intention to re-marry. The couple reportedly re-married on January 14, 2006. In less than three months, Eminem again filed for a divorce, saying that “we both tried to give our marriage another chance and quickly realized that a wedding doesn’t fix the underlying problems,” while Kim sites his dependency to sleep medications as the main problem. Eminem came back to the music scene in 2006 with Eminem Presents: The Re-Up, a mixtape featuring new artists from his very own Shady Records.
