A Type 1 diabetic, allergic to trees, grass and pollen, 90% deaf in the right ear…these are not the usual characteristics of an American Idol contestant. But Elliot Yamin not only surprised everyone by making it to the top 12, he also finished as the second runner up.

About
Elliott Yamin, (full name Efraym Elliott Yamin), hails from Richmond Virginia. He was born to parents Shaul Yamin of Israeli and Iraqi descent and Claudette Yamin, a former professional singer on July 20, 1978. Yamin attended Douglas S. Freeman High School until his sophomore year when he had to drop out in order to work. He eventually earned his GED in 1997 at the Virginia Randolph Education Center.
Before qualifying as a contestant for American Idol, he has been to 43 different jobs including 6 years at Foot Locker, collections, customer service, retail, landscaping, vinyl-siding installation, part-time deejay for Power 92 and counter clerk at Westbury Pharmacy. He was also featured on local gospel musical artist Big Planz’s album Sound Doctrine in 2005.
Elliott Yamin auditioned for American Idol season 5 in Boston, Massachusettes and made it to Hollywood. He was a consistent favorite during the run of American Idol Season 5, not only by the viewers but also by the show's crew and even the judges themselves. The most memorable comments he has received from the judges are being called "one funky white boy" by Paula Abdul, and "potentially the best male vocalist" by Simon Cowell.
After the show ended, Yamin reportedly signed a publishing deal with Sony Records. He also released a cover of Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" on iTunes and AOL Music. His debut album is set to be out by the middle of March 2007.
