About
Steven Paul Smith was bon on August 6, 1969 in Omaha, Nebraska to mother Bunny Welch and fathe Gary Smith. At the age of 1, his parents got divorced and soon Smith and his mother left Omaha and moved to Duncanville, Texas on 1973. In Texas, Smith had piano lessons for a year and began learning guitar at the age of 10. His passion for music began when he composed a piano piece entitled "Fantasy" which won him a prize in a local festival.
At 14 when the family moved from Texas to Portland, it was during this time that Smith began trying drugs and alcohol with friends. While having vices, it was also during this time that they've had their first experience in recoding music for the first time by borrowing a friends recorder. He started to perform gigs with the band "Stranger Than Fiction" and graduated from Lincoln High School on June 3, 1987. And graduate with the degree in Philosophy and Political Science from Hampshire College in Massachusets.
More significantly upon his return to Potland, he formed a band named "Heatmiser" with Neil Gust, Tony Lash, and Brandt Peterson on 1991. The short-lived band was then disbanded on 1995 after releasing two albums. Shotly after the breaking up of the band, Smith began recording solo and released his debut album Roman Candle on 1994. It was her girlfriend at that time who convinced him to send a copy of the tape to Cavity Search Record executive and owner Cristopher Cooper who immediately requested to release it.
Elliott Smith died on October 21, 2003 in the Echo Park section of Los Angeles, California in his home at age 34, from two stabs.
