Drowned World/Substitute for Love is a ballad by American pop superstar Madonna, released as the third single in 1998 from the singer's seventh studio album, Ray of Light. The song's name was changed to "Drowned World (Substitute for Love)" for its single release.

Drowned World/Substitute for Love was released on August 24, 1998 under Warner Bros. It is the third release from the album Ray of Light by Madonna. The song reached no.10 on the U.K. chart. The song was also a big hit in other countries like Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, China, and Japan. It was written by the singer Madonna, William Orbit, Rod McKuen, Anita Kerr and David Collins for her seventh album Ray of Light.

Drowned World/Substitute for Love was directed by Walter Stern. The music video was shot in the London's famous Savoy Hotel. The video basically revolves around Madonna being chased after the paparazzi. Madonna escaped from the chaos, she then went to a peaceful hallway and there she saw the hotel maid and again she was being shot by the camera. It is a controversial music video of Madonna.

  • Madonna named her tour after the song and used it as the opening number of the tour.
  • The music video of this single created a lot of controversies in 1998 due to some scenes of Madonna that was chased by paparazzi on motor bikes, similar to Princess Diana's death in 1997.
