About
Death Cab for Cutie was formed in 1997 in Washington. The name was taken from a song of the same title by The Bonzo Dog Band of the ‘60s. Initially, only Ben Gibbard comprised Death Cab for Cutie, when he released You Can Play These Songs with Chords but Chris Walla and Nicholas Harmer also performed on the released cassette. The two then became members of the group, plus Nathan Good who took care of the drums. Something About Airplanes was then released by the band in 1998, receiving encouraging reviews. The album was followed by We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes in 2000, but Nathan left while it was still being recorded, so there were two tracks in the album with their drums performed by Nathan since the band decided to keep them as they were. The band found a new drummer in Michael Schorr shortly afterwards, and they released The Forbidden Love EP that same year. In 2001, the band again came out with The Photo Album, another LP. Some editions of this LP had three extra tracks which were then later released as The Stability EP.
Just as in 2000, another change in the band drummer occurred – Michael was replaced by Jason McGerr, who played the drums in their next release, and perhaps their best album ever, Transatlanticism in 2003. Apart from selling hundreds of thousands of copies on its first year, songs from the album was also featured in various TV series like Six Feet Under and The O.C. and the movie The Wedding Crashers.
A live album came next for the band, The John Byrd E.P in 2005 under Barsuk Records. The title of the album was after the sound engineer’s name. In late 2004 however, the band signed under Atlantic Records. With their new record label, the band released Plans. This is another phenomenal success for the band, as it not only gained critical praise but even received a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album in 2005.
Apart from their album releases, Death Cab for Cutie also released two DVDs – one was Drive Well, Sleep Carefully, a film folloring their 2004 US tour, and the other was Directions in 2006, which showcased short films whose themes were from the tracks of Plans.
