Deana Carter began her musical career relatively late but managed to defy conventional expectations and make into the top of the country charts upon the released of her first album, Did I Shave My Legs for This?.

Deana Carter was born on January 4, 1966 at Nashville, Tennessee and the daughter of Nashville studio guitarist Fred Carter, Jr. and as a kid, she was already exposed to a wide variety of music. Deana's father played guitar foa a wide variety of musician, such as Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings and Simon Garfunkel. At the age of 17, Deana tried to have a recording contract but wasn't able to secure a deal despite the help of her father. Deana decided to stopped pursuing her career and went to University of Tennessee to study Nursing.
After her graduation, Deana works with head injury patients. At the age of 23, she decided to go back to music industry. She learned to play guitar and began to write songs and sing at Nashville nightclubs. One of her deme tapes was heard by Willie Nelson. He remembered Deana from way way back and was impressed with her songs and he asked Deana to perform at Farm Aid VII in 1994; Deana was the only female artist on the entire show. Within a year, Capitol Nashville, who also heard the demo tapes of Deana, immediatedly signed her a recording contract.
Deana wrote six songs for her debut album, Did I Shave My Legs For This? and was released with a positive reviews in late summer of 1996. Her single "Strawberry Wine" climbed into number one and made her won the "CMA Single of the Year." By the end of the year, her album had climbed to the top of the country and pop charts, and went gold as well. In the later part of 1998, she released her next album Everything's Gonna Be Alright and in 2001, Deana released her Christmas album Father Christmas with her father playing the guitar. Her next studio album, I'm Just a Girl was released in 2003 and The Story of My Life followed in 2005.
Deana also sang the movie theme song of Hope and the Walt Disney Animated Film Anastasia in which Deana was nominated in Grammy Awards of the song "Once Upon A December". Deana also became the National Spokesperson for the National Kidney Foundation.
