About
Dean Wareham was born in Wellington, New Zealand and moved to NYC at age 14. Dean attended Harvard University where he met Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang, with whom he formed Galaxie 500 in 1987. After four years as indie stars the band broke up in 1991. Wareham went on to create Luna with fellow New Zealander Justin Harwood (The Chills) and New Jersey born Stanley Demeski (The Feelies) . In 2000, Harwood left Luna and was replaced by Britta Phillips.
Britta Phillips grew up in Bucks County, PA. and moved to NYC at age 18. In the mid-80's she landed a role as the singing voice of the cartoon character Jem (of Jem and the Holograms). The cartoon ran from 1985 to 1988. She landed one major film role starring opposite Justine Bateman and Julia Roberts in the movie Satisfaction. Britta would go on to form Belltower with guitarist Jody Porter whom she married and then divorced. After the group had a handful of singles and one album the band broke up in 1995.
After Phillips joined Luna, her vocals became an integral part of the band's sound. In 2003, Dean & Britta, now romantically involved, released a breezy duet album called L'Avventura. Following the 2004 dissolution of Luna, Dean & Britta made their partnership official with the release of the 2007 LP, Back Numbers. Dean and Britta have also delved into the world of film and provided the score for Noah Baumbach's critically acclaimed, "The Squid & The Whale" (2005).
