About
Debut Album
Kelvin Mercer, David Jude Jolicoeur, and Vincent Mason formed the group while they were still in high school on 1987. Their demo record caught the attention of Paul Huston who later named the group De La Soul.
The group released their debut album 3 Feet High and Rising on 1989. The album led by its hit single "Me, Myself and I" became an instant hit cementing their popularity in the hip hop genre music. Much more fans loved what message they want to sent to their fans in the album that is to strive for peace and harmony which they felt is fading from the rap community.
Other Albums
De La Soul Is Dead was released on 1991 as their second full length album. The album sends message about the violence hip hop music was heading. And has released several singles including "Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa" which was about a girl who can no longer take the domestic abuse of ther father and the lead single "Ring Ring Ring" which was about people using their current fame to launch their career. The album was certified gold in the Unites States.
On 1993, the group released their third album Buhloone Mindstate which put the band a stronger hold as mainstays of the alternative hip hop movement. Similarly, the album released several singles including "I Be Blowin'", "I Am I Be", "Long Island Wildin'" among others. This album saw the band collaborate with famous artist such as Gang Starr as well as Japanese trio Scha Dara Parr.
The group's fourth album Stakes Is High released on 1996 was the first album produced solely by the group. Mixed results and poor sales hounded the album. Four year after the hiatus on the music scene, the group decided to release a triple album series the first one called Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump and the second AOI: Bionix. After the second release the public saw no release of the third and final ones of the series which was primarily due to a conflict with Tommy Boy Records music label.
However come 2004, they ended releasing a new full lenght album called The Grind Date via Sanctuary Records. The album features guest performances from MF Doom, Ghostface Killah and Flava Flav. Though the first single failed in the charts, the album was generally received well by fans.
Grammy Award
In 2005, the group was featured on the Gorillaz single "Feel Good Inc" on the LA Symphony single "Universal". The single gave them a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Collaboration.
