About
David Crowder moved to Waco, Texas from a little town called Texarkana in the northeast corner of Texas to go to school at Baylor University. David recognized the Christian university he was enrolled in has a great deal of students not involved in a church, and realized the need for the estranged college generation to get connected. There he and a good friend Chris Seay started University Baptist Church in 1996, while they were still undergrads. David was officially titled Music and Arts Pastor, where he lead worship and started to write songs for their community--songs where the students in the church could relate to. Eventually the congregation grew, and David Crowder Band emerged. UBC continues to expand up to now, and the band strives to go back there most Sundays.
David Crowder Band released an independent CD, Pour Over Me for their church community, followed by All I Can Say in 1999. The band started to get noticed by people from other parts of the country, and offers came for them to play in various events in different places. They got signed under sixsteprecords/Sparrow Records thereafter, and set forth to make albums under the label, including Can You Hear Us? (2002), Illuminate (2003), A Collision (2005) and their current, B Collision (2006).
The band has been involved in compilations and collaborations, including Passion Worship where their songs "You Alone," "O Praise Him (All This For A King)" and "Our Love is Loud" has become theme songs for young people and college-aged groups--the same ones who sparked their desire to reach out and birth the band. "Our Love is Loud" was nominated for Best Modern Rock/Alternative Song of the Year at the 2003 Dove Awards, and Passion: Our Love is Loud was nominated for Special Event Album of the Year. In 2005, they won their first Dove Awards for Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year (A Collision), Rock/Contemporary Song of the Year ("Here is Our King") and for their contribution to the Music Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia album. Their song in the album is "Turkish Delight" which is a reference to the enchanted Turkish Delight in C.S. Lewis's book The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Can You Hear Us, their first album under Sparrow Records, was instantly accepted by the crowd. They sold 6,200 copies in its first week, granting Sparrow their biggest selling debut artist ever. Their sophomore release, Illuminate, proved David Crowder Band as a strong holder in the sales charts, selling more than 200,000 units since its release. The 2005 record A Collision grabbed the #39 spot on Billboard 200 a day after its release.
Besides being frontman for the band, David Crowder has also written two books: Praise Habit: Finding God in Sunsets and Sushi (2005) and Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven, but Nobody Wants to Die (The Eschatology of Bluegrass) (2006).
