[edit] About
Born on February 1975 and a native of Vernon, a town in the Okanagan Valley of south-central British Columbia, Daniel Robert Powter is a talented musician who started playing the violin at a very young age under the supervision of his mother who is also a musician. When he entered high school, he shifted his interest from violin to piano and later on formed his band. But it tool a while before he overcome his stage fright. He had his first record played in a radio contest in Victoria, British Columbia. When he graduated, he continued his education at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton under a scholarship but failed his music theory due to his dyslexia. He decided to drop out after two years and pursued his interest in music.
When he moved to Vancouver, he met Jeff Dawson. He began collaborating with him and they began working in a tiny studio, writing songs.. They drew attention from music scouts and they were interested with them. But, Daniel's stage fright prevented them to being signed. His manager, Gary Stamler forward Daniel's demo tapes to Warner Brothers. Soon, he began recording for the said label. Mitchell Froom (Pearl Jam, Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega), a veteran producer was assigned to the project and the three of them (Powter, Dawson and Froom) became a team.
His first pop piano single Bad Day was released in Europe in 2005 where Warner Brothers chose it as an entry for Coca-Cola's search for a song in their European ad campaign. Moreover, the single was used for the American Idol season five show and he sang it live when the show ended on May 23, 2006. Soon, the song was heard worldwide and reached the various charts on the top five position including Billboard Hot 100, Adult Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts, where it reached the number one spot. It made him the first solo Canadian singer to top the Billboard Hot 100 since Bryan Adams. His next single from his self-title album are Jimmy Gets High, Lie To Me and Free Loop all released in different parts of the world but failed to match or even come close to his massive hit single, Bad Day.
In the UK, the second single Free Loop was released but WEA (Warner Brothers' international distributor) failed to realize that is was a chart ineligible. It was featured as a B-side on the live version of Bad Day and it was still in the UK top 40. According to the UK chart rules, a music artist cannot have both the previous and the latest version of the single if the previous is stil on the charts. Consequently, Lie To Me was released but was a flop, completely missing the top 75. The single charted at number 91 in the UK because of lack of promotion and distribution problems.
The fourth single released in UK is Jimmy Get High while the second single released in the US was Free Loop, which barely broke the charts. His third single in the US will be Love You Lately released in October and re-released his album on November.
