About

The former frontman of Juniper, who wrote rock singles such as The World Is Dead and Weatherman, Rice realized that he wanted to go to another direction and quit the band. He moved to Italy and wrote songs, played guitar across Europe until he was able to form a band and get gigs from coffeeshops around the Dublin area. He was able to get enough attention, including his second cousin, David Arnorld and was able to release his debut album, O, for which he won the Shortlist Music Prize in 2003.

Singles from his first record were The Blower's Daughter and Cold Water were both featured in the 2004 Mike NIchols film Closer (starring Julia Roberts, Jude Law and Clive Owen). Other movies that included his songs were Stay, The Girl In The Cafe and I Am David. Cold Water was also featured on hit TV drama series like E.R., Lost, House, Alias and CSI: Miami. His single Cannoball was featured on other TV series as well, like in The L Word and The OC. The track also made the soundtrack for the feature film In Good Company (starring Dennis Quaid, Scarlett Johanssen and Topher Grace). Rice's singles were a favorite for TV show finales and movie soundtracks, making him popular enough but still not in mainstream music.

Damien Rice, notable for his serious concentration on his music, hurled at DJ Tom Dunne of Petsounds (Today FM) for remixing his single Cannonball for UK radio to make it more radio-friendly. Rice was uhappy with the remix and said that he did not really like it. He stated that he had allowed the remix to go through only if he signed a contract that would forbid anyone from ever remixing one of his songs ever again.

Another banter from Rice was at one of his Autralian gigs. Rice apparently, did not anyone talking during his set. He reportedly shouted at an audience member who was speaking and he'd give him his ticket money, plus parking fee if he left the arena. Also, at a Los Angeles show, Rice commented about how he was displeased with Britney Spears and her date Colin Farrell who talked during his set.

Rice spent 2004 and 2005 recording and writing songs for his follow-up to O. The record has been confirmed by the artistt himself at a recent Toronto concert that it will set to be released in late 2006. His record label, 14th Floor Records, confirmed that his spphomore album, entitled 9, will be released on November 6, 2006.

Reviews

Damien Rice, one of the most prolific singer/songwriter of his generation. His voice is a definite beauty by itself. The lyrics on all his songs are touching, deep, profound. There is no way you won't forget the tunes of it as well. The single The Blower's Daughter is much too precious not to listen to. I especially love Cannonball and I can almost recite the while lyrics. My favorite show is The OC and I was amazed how this song sounded, and added drama to every heartbreaking scene. I had to buy his album the next day. My verdict, Damien Rice is A-OK.--Angelic biatch 09:01, 22 September 2006 (PDT)
