About

R&B singer D'Angelo (Michael Eugene Archer) was born on February 11, 1974 in Richmond, Virginia. At a young age, he taught himself how to play the piano. At 18 years old, he won an amateur talent contest at Harlem's Apollo. D'Angelo was a member of the hip-hop group, I.D.U. In 1991, the group signed in with EMI records. In 1995, he released his debut album, Brown Sugar. The single "Lady" was a hit earning attention of fans. The album sold over two million copies and was supported by heavy tours.

D'Angelo took a time off. He went behind the music scene writing songs for Eddie Kendricks' "Girl You Need a Change of Mind", the Ohio Players' "Heaven Must Be Like This" and Prince's "She's Always in My Hair". He also made a duet with Lauryn Hill on "Nothing Really Matters" which was a Grammy award winning piece. In 2000, the long awaited follow-up album, Voodoo, was released.
