At 18 years old, he won an amateur talent contest at Harlem's Apollo. D'Angelo was a member of the hip-hop group, I.D.U. In 1991, the group signed in with EMI records. In 1995, he released his debut album, Brown Sugar. The single "Lady" was a hit earning attention of fans. The album sold over two million copies and was supported by heavy tours.
