Considered one of the most unforgettable singers, Curtis Mayfied is an American soul, funk and R&B singer, songwriter and guitarist. One of his albums, Superfly which is considered the most influential albums. He died on December 26, 1999.

Curtis Mayfield was born on June 3, 1942 at Chicago, Illinois to Percy Mayfield, a rhythm and blues artist. At his teen-age years, he was a member of a local gospel group called Northern Jubilee Gospel Singers. Curtis attended school at Wells High School. When he reached tenth graded, he decided to stop schooling to become the lead singer of the band The Impressions in 1956. The band had released several hits such as, For Your Precious Love, and Gypsy Woman. Curtis was the lead singer of the band until 1970.
In 1970, he left the band. In 1971, he began his solo career. He founded the independent record Curton Records In 1972; he released the album, Superfly. The album was considered his most influential albums. Curtis produced many movie soundtracks.
Curtis was an active singer throughout the 70's and 80's. Then a tragedy came, in 1990, Curtis was paralyzed from the neck down after stage lighting equipment fell on him at a concert in Brooklyn, New York. He was unable to play guitar, but he managed to write a song and recorded his last album, New World Order. In 1998, he had to have his right leg amputated due to diabetes. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for his contributions in the music industry. Curtis died on December 26, 1999 in Atlanta, Georgia.
In 2000, Curtis was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Also in that year, a two-hour musical celebration was held to commemorate Curtis life and career at the First AME Church in Los Angeles. Performers includes Stevie Wonder, Lauryn Hill, The Impressions, and Danny Glover led the event.
