About
Corinne Bailey Rae was born on February 26, 1979 to a Kittitian father and an English mother. She has two other sisters, and together they faced a childhood of being verbally abused by people who thought she was of Pakistani origin.
But that situation didn't stop Corinne from working hard to achieve her dreams. A student of classical violin, she later focused on singing. According to her website, she sang in a "regular Brethren church, very middle-class" every Sunday. "It was always my favourite part of the service, the singing."
With that, her passion for singing grew. And when a local youth leader offered to buy her an electric guitar, Corinne became obsessed. Looking to Led Zeppelin as her favorite musician, she "wanted, somehow, to follow in their footsteps, and to create music of [her] own."
At the age of fifteen, Corinne formed her own rock band named Helen, an all-female group alongside a white male-dominated indie music world. They performed many gigs, counting one with Leeds-based band Swift, fronted by wildman rocker Royce Dunston. Later in 1995, Roadrunner Records, the label handling Slipknot, signed the group, only to later disband when their bassist got pregnant.
Corinne, though disappointed, went to college and started singing at a local jazz club, with the owner allowing her to do so when business was slow. This time, she not only fell in love with jazz but with Jason Rae, a saxophone player, whom she married in 2001 at the age of 22.
She then focused on her solo jazz career, collaborating with bands like The New Mastersounds and Homecut Directive. In 2004, Mark Hill from The Artful Dodger asked her to appear in his new album. The single, Young and Foolish, was released in 2005 and caught the attention major record labels. Later that year, she released her debut single, Like A Star, and in 2006 followed her self-titled album which led her to become the fourth female British act in history to have her first album debut at number one. By September, Corinne was garnering awards like "Best UK Newcomer" and "Best UK Female" at the UK MOBO Awards.
