[edit] About
Cheap Trick was formed by Rick Nielsen for guitar and Tom Petersson for Bass at Rockford, Illinois. They were originally called as Fuse. The band released an unsucessful album in 1969. They decided to move to Philadelphia and changed their name to Sick Man in Europe. The group toured in Europe in 1972 but it wasw unsuccessful. In 1973, they returned to Illinois. They again changed their name to Cheap Trick. They add Bun E. Carlos for Drums and Randy "Xeno" Hogan for vocals. In 1974, Randy was fired and replaced by Robin Zander
In 1977, Cheap Trick signed a recording contract under Epic Records and released their self-titled debut album. It sold well in U.S. but failed to reach Billboard charts. However, they became popular in Japan. Their album went gold in Japan. In the later part of 1977, the band released their second album, In Color. Due to their constant touring, their album made it into the U.S. charts, reaching number 73. It again became record-breaking sales in Japan.
In 1978, they released their third album, Heaven Tonight. The album became their first biggest hits selling more than three million copies in U.S. The album also stayed on the charts for over a year. The single, I Want You To Want Me became their first Top Ten hit. In later part of 1978, they released their fourth album, Dream Police which sold over a million copies.
In summer of 1980, Tom Petterson left the group to form a new group with his wife. He was replaced by Jon Brant. In the end of 1980, they released their album, All Shook Up, reaching number 24 on the chart.
In 1982, they released another album, One on One, which is more successful than All Shook Up. The album went platinum. In 1983 Next Position Please was released however, failed to launched a hit single and spent only 11 weeks on the charts. In 1985, the album Standing on the Edge and in 1986 The Doctor suffered similar fates, as the group was slowly losing its creative spark.
In 1988, Tom Petersson rejoined the band and began to work on a new album. The album, Lap of Luxury went platinum and reached Top 20 in the Billboard Charts. It features their number one single, The Flame. In 1990, their album, Busted was released but it was not successful as Lap of Luxury reaching at number 48 on charts.
In 1994, they signed a recording contract with Warner Bros. They released their album, Woke Up With A Monster and spent two week on the chart. In 1995, the band was asked to leave Warner Bros. Several alternative rockers who were influenced by Cheap Trick gave the band opportunities to restore its reputation.
In 1998, Cheap Trick signed a recording contract with an indie label Alliance Records and released their self-titled album. In 2003, under a new label called Big3 Entertainment they released their album, Special One. In 2006, they released another album, Rockford.
