About
R&B and soul music artist, Charlie Wilson is the lead singer of the Gap Band. He and his brothers, Ronnie who played trumpet/keyboards and Robert who played bass sang for their churhc and later on formed a group called the Gap Band acronym for three streets in Tulsa, Greenwood, Archer, and Pine. In 1973, their talent paid off when Leon Russell hired them to be his opening act. They recorded demos at Russell's home. They were discovered by Lonnie Simmons owner of Total Experience Records and gave them a contract in 1978.
The Gap Band being a 14-member act, Simmons narrowed them to a trio, he also suggested them to have a cowboy signiture style. They had hit singles like, "Shake," "Steppin' (Out)," and "I Don't Believe You Want to Get up and Dance (Oops, up Side Your Head)". After changing labels, the trio became more successful but Ronnie Wilson left the band to pursue his dream which is to do gospel music. This was the end of the Gap Band.
In 2005, he came back with a solo album, Charlie Last Name Wilson. He also appeared on R. Kelly's single "Mi Casa". Wilson worked with a number of respected artists such as Snoop Dogg, Pharrell and Justin Timberlake.
