The British Pop Invasion is undoubtedly one the most unforgettable eras in American music history as it has produced icons whose contribution to music is treasured up to now. One of these icons are Chad and Jeremy, a singing folk rock duo, whose fame was such a success that they were able to record up to 75 songs, release up to 12 albums and sell millions of copies of these albums worldwide. Though the duo has long since disbanded, their music is still kept alive with their albums’ thirty seven re-releases and their hits played on recent films like Rushmore and Princess Diaries.

About

Chad and Jeremy was composed of Chad Stuart (real name, David Stuart Chadwick) and Jeremy Clyde (real name Michael Thomas Jeremy Clyde) both born and raised in England. Unlike must of their contemporaries, the duo actually started in the field of acting and met while studying drama and film in the prestigious Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Together, they initially formed a rock band with their other schoolmates called The Jerks but broke up after Jeremy graduated a year before Chad. A year later the duo reunited and started singing in coffee shops including one called Tina’s. This is where they were discovered by record producer and songwriter, John Barry who gave them their first and only real British hit Yesterday’s Gone.

Crossover

Though the first single soared through the charts, U.K. was just not warming up to the subsequently released album. But luck was on Chad and Jeremy’s side when an American label bought the rights to bring their music in American airwaves. Yesterday’s Gone was an instant hit and by mid-1964, a single entitled A Summer Song, which had never even been released in Britain, became Chad and Jeremy’s second and biggest U.S. hit. The American release of their first album containing Yesterday’s Gone which sold rapidly, paved the way for Chad and Jeremy in the American music industry and soon they were releasing one album after another.

The success of Chad and Jeremy was considered sealed when John Hartman, a William Morris agent saw their guest appearance on a TV show and signed them to appear on several comedy shows and sitcoms. Soon Chad and Jeremy were seen regularly on TV including The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Patty Duke Show, The Andy Williams Show, The Danny Kaye Show, Shindig and Hullabaloo.

The Separation

Chad and Jeremy’s music career as a duo may be doing very well, but the same cannot be said for their relationship. Both just wanted different things with Chad willing to continue singing but still getting over his illness, mononucleosis, and Jeremy wanting to pursue his fist love of acting. Though the duo denied rumors of breaking up, by the end of 1965 Chad and Jeremy had gone their separate ways.

Together Again

Barely a year after Chad and Jeremy’s split, the two were already reunited another album Teenage Failure. The album was much anticipated but did not reach the level of their early hits because of its eclectic compilation of tracks that was unusual for Chad and Jeremy. A few months later they released their “reunion” single Distant Shores followed by the Chad and Jeremy’s last hit You Are She.

In 1967, the world began to see a more passionate Chad and Jeremy as the duo wanted to record something more significant as a testament of their maturity. The result is the album Of Cabbages and Kings which though inspired a lot of controversies for its resemblance to the satiric albums of The Beatles, did not sell as much as was expected.

Gone for Good

Chad and Jeremy soon released another album The Ark and started recording Three in the Attic, a musical score for a movie of the same name and though in the eyes of the world the duo seemed fine, the tension between the two was mounting with Jeremy’s interest in rekindling his acting career again. By the time Three in the Attic was released in 1969, Chad and Jeremy was officially over.

In 1983, Chad and Jeremy came back in the musical scene with the release of their “reunion” album Chad Stuart and Jeremy Clyde and briefly reunited again for the British Reinvasion tour in 1986. In 2004, the duo released a special acoustic album followed by another in 2005. Chad and Jeremy still tours in the U.S. and other countries from time to time up to now.
