Under the new name, Yusuf Islam, Cat Stevens is an English musician, singer-songwriter, educator, philanthropist, and a prominent convert to Islam. He has sold over 60 million copies. One of his most successful albums is Tea For The Tillerman.

Cat Stevens, who's real name Steven Demetre Georgiou was born on July 21, 1948 at London, England to Stavris Georgiou and Ingrid Wickman. Her parents owned a restaurant in Shaftesbury Avenue. When he was eight years old, his parents divorced. He began to play piano and guitar and composed a song when he was 12 years old. A few years later, Cat and his mom moved to Gavle, Sweden.

After Cat left high school when he was 16 years ole, he started to performed in pubs and coffee houses. By that time, he began to change his name to Cat Stevens so that it can be easily remembered. In 1966, he signed a recording contract under Mike Hurst recording company. He releases his first singles, I Love My Dogs and Matthew and Son which reached Britains Top 10 chart. In 1967, he released his debut album, Matthew and Son. The album also reached to Britains chart. Cat Stevens was considered a teen pop sensation.

In December 1967, his album, New Masters failed to reached the chart but the album received good reviews from several music critics. In 1970, he signed a recording contract with Island Records. He released a folk-based album, Mona Bone Jakon. It became a major hit. Another album, Tea For The Tillerman was released and its his first album to reached the number one in Billboard chart. The album features the top 10 singles, Wild World, Hard-Headed Woman and Father and Son. It has sold over 3 million copies in the United States alone. It was also included in Rolling Stone magazines listing of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. His next album, Firecat became a major hit too and sold over 3 million copies.

In 1972, he released another album, Catch Bull at Four and was his most rapidly successful album. The album went gold in just 15 days after the released and became number one in Billboard charts for three weeks. His final album, Back To Earth under the name of Cat Stevens also did well on the charts. After that, several compilation albums was released.

In 1977, he formally converted to the Islamic faith. In 1978, he changed his name to Yusuf Islam. After his conversion, he left his music career. He devoted himself to educational and philanthropic causes in the Muslim community. In 2006, he returned to the music industry via his album, An Other Cup. In 2007, Yusuf Islam was awarded the Mediterranean Prize for Peace in Naples, Italy.
