About
Born Charlyn Marie Marshall on January 21, 1972 in Atlanta, Georgia. His father is a pianist who travels around the Southern part of the United States. Her travels with her father during her childhood has helped her prepare for the life she has now as a singer.
Marshall dropped out of high school and concentrated in making music. She started performing in New York under the pseudonym Cat Power. She moved to New York by 1992 and 2 years later she's the opening act for fellow singer/songwriter Liz Phair. Watching the show were Sonic Youth's drummer, Steve Shelley and Two Dollar Guiatar's Tim Foljahn, who convince her to record and agreed to be her backing band. That same year, she recorded her debut and sophomore effort Dear Sir and Myra Lee which was released on 1995 and 1996 respectively. By 1996, she was signed to Matador Records and released her third album, What Would the Community Think.
Cat Power took a 2-year hiatus, working as a baby sitter then moved in a farmhouse in South Carolina. After a series of sleepless nights and a nightmare, she began writing songs which resulted to her fourth album Moon Pix, released in 1998. The album has connections to the moon or its cycle, hence its title. Following its success are three more albums, The Covers Record (2000), You Re Free (20030 and The Greatest (2006).
