Cake was formed in 1991 by "John McCrea" on vocals with "Greg Brown" on guitar, "Vince Difiore" on trumpet. "Shon Meckfessel" on bass and "Frank French" on drums. Later on, Shon left the band to continue his schooling. He was replaced by "Gabe Nelson". Their debut single, "Rock 'N' Roll Lifestyle" was released in 1993 which chartered at #31 on US Modern Rock Tracks. Their single was included in their debut album, Motorcade of Generosity which was released in 1994 under Capricorn Records. After the released of their debut album, Gabe and Frank left the group. The two were replaced by, "Victor Damiani" and "Todd Roper".


Capricorn Records reissued their first single, "Rock 'N' Roll Lifestyle" in 1995. Followed by their two singles entitled, "Ruby Sees All," and "Jolene". In 1996, their second album, Fashion Nugget was issued. The album features the single "The Distance" which landed at #4 on The US Modern Rock Tracks and #38 on US Mainstream Rock Tracks. The single sold over a million copies. Greg and Victor left the band in 1997 to formed a new group. Gabe returned to the band to replaced Victor. Their next album, Prolonging The Magic was released in 1998. It features their hit single, "Never There" which chartered at #1 on US Modern Rock Tracks.


The group signed a recording contract under Columbia Records in 2000. After a year, their fourth album, Comfort Eagle. The album spawned the single, "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" which reached #7 on The US Modern Rock Tracks. After the released of the said album, Todd left the band to spend more time with his family. He was replaced by "Pete McNeal". "Paulo Baldi" joined the band in 2003. Their fifth album, Pressure Chief was released on October 2004 which features the singles, "No Phone" and "The Guitar Man". Their next album will be due to be release on the early part of 2009.

  • The song "Sad Songs & Waltzes," on the 1996 album Fashion Nugget, is a cover and was originally written and recorded by Willie Nelson in 1973 on his album Shotgun Willie.
  • In June 2008, lead singer John McCrea told music publication REVUE that he is thinking seriously of quitting touring to become a farmer.
