CMX is one of the forefront Finnish rock bands. It started in 1985 with hardcore punk, but its music has since evolved into prog or art rock.
CMX was founded by Pekka Kanniainen (drums) and A. W. Yrjänä (vocals, bass). Both were 18 years old at time. All the lyrics are written by Yrjänä, who has also released several poetry collections. He is known for his mythological and often melancholy texts.
The band's debut album was Kolmikärki, released through the Bad Vugum label in 1990. The style was much more aggressive than in later releases. The follow-ups were Veljeskunta in 1991 and Aurinko in 1992.
Aura (1994) already showed some classical influences. Rautakantele (1995) and Vainajala (1998) are generally seen as pure rock albums, but Discopolis (1996) was a disappointment to many fans. Its sound is very different from the earlier output, and the prog influences are quite clear. One of the founding members, the drummer Pekka Kanniainen left CMX in 1997.
In 2000, CMX released the progressive double album Dinosaurus Stereophonicus. They have since released three new albums, Isohaara (2002), Aion (2003) and Pedot (2005). CMX is currently recording a new album, which is scheduled for release in late 2007.
