[edit] About

At the tender age of 10, Butterfly Boucher already started experimenting with a four-track recorder, creating music on her own and playing all the instruments. She became the bassist and background vocalist of The Mercy Bell, a band that also included one of her sisters. A record deal prompted the siblings to move to Europe, but Butterfly's good friend Mike Dixon suggested that she try to go solo instead. She took the advice and gathered all her resources, spending what she had on a laptop and a trip to Stockholm, England where she further enhanced her writing skills. It is during this time that Butterfly learned to avoid her old habit of cramming 5 or 6 ideas in one song, and instead focused on simplifying her compositions, limiting each song with at most 3 ideas. People started to notice her songs. Courtesy of Dixon's connections in the music industry, Butterfly signed under a deal with A&M Records. Her debut album, Flutterby, was released on February 2004.

Butterfly also toured the U.S. and Europe in 2004 and 2005 with Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan.

[edit] Trivia

  • Her name was suggested by a family friend. Butterfly's mother did not like the name at first but agreed upon seeing butterflies in a picture on a school wall and in a print on a leotard before Butterfly's birth. Another situation that made her mother choose the name was when one of her daughters brought home a 45rpm single of "The Butterfly Song."
  • "Never Leave Your Heart Alone," "Life is Short," and "A Bitter Song" were featured in the hit ABC hospital drama Grey's Anatomy.
  • "A Bitter Song" is one of the tracks off the yet-unreleased sophomore album Scary Fragile.
  • Butterfly sings harmony on the song "Not Enough Night" by David Poe.
