Breakaway was released on November 30, 2004 under RCA Records. Kelly Clarkson has writing credits for six songs in the album, including "Because of You" and "Addicted" which she collaborated with Ben Moody and David Hodges.

Kelly started making this album during her one-month break from the promotional tour of Thankful. She is involved in the details of making this album. Breakaway allowed Kelly's artistic intuition to flow. This album showed that Kelly is more than a great singer, she is also a writer and an artist with a vision and a drive to succeed.
